A highly realistic profile of a Blue-Winged Olive mayfly dun for slack water. When it comes to selective trout, it helps to have a few versions of a Baetis pattern. This pattern is excellent when trout are selectively picking newly emerged blue-winged olive flies off the surface.

About Blue Winged Olives

Blue Wing Olives, or B.W.O.s, are small mayflies ranging in size from #18 to #22. They are among the most widespread and complex mayflies that fly fishermen will encounter. B.W.O.s are multi-generational, meaning that different generations will emerge throughout the year.

In general, hatches occur in the spring and fall, with the most intense hatches taking place on cloudy, cool, wet, or snowy days. B.W.O.s are typically found in slower-moving water, back eddies, and quiet pools, but they prefer shallow, sun-struck riffles.

Although small, trout key into B.W.O. hatches and often ignore larger meals due to the sheer number of these mayflies.

All phases of the hatch are important to anglers, and the nymphs release from the bottom of the river and swim to the surface to emerge. Fly fishermen should carry nymphs, emergers, cripples, duns, and spinner fly patterns.

When Do Blue Wing Olives Hatch?

A Blue wing olive hatch can happen year round. However, they mostly happen in the spring and then again in the fall starting in mid September. These hatches are largely dependent on water temperature. Cloudy, rainy, stormy, and snowy weather makes for the best hatches. Why? Mayfly wings take longer to dry in damp conditions and, therefore, BWOs drift for longer distances on the water's surface. During these times the hatches are the longest and most intense.

Many times, you will also see a blue wing olive hatch during the summer. This typically happens when there is a drastic change in the weather and temperature. It is not uncommon for rain storms to both drop the air and water temperature enough to trigger a blue wing olive hatch. Always carry b.w.o. patterns in your fly box and be ready to match a spontaneous b.w.o. hatch.

What Size Hook For A Blue Winged Olive?

A B.W.O.'s body is slender and small. Choose blue wing olive fly patterns in hook sizes 18-22. Blue Winged Olives in the spring months are the largest of the species best fished in a size #16 to #18. The smaller sizes #20 to #22 are typically seen in the late summer and fall months.
